Meet Catherine Hamilton Humphries

Catherine Humphries is an emerging artist interested in exploring themes of time, stillness, memory, and rhythms of nature through oil painting and primitive charcoal drawings. She is currently in the process of moving her studio to Charlottesville from Atlanta Ga, where she recently wrapped up her summer-long premier solo exhibition at Gallery 1740 entitled “Vespers”. Catherine has taken advantage of the opportunity to show internationally as well through juried group exhibitions at the Green Hill gallery in Berlin as well as being apart of “La Mostra”; an annual show in central Italy specializing on promoting american works abroad. She hopes to continue her studio practice in Charlottesville by drawing new inspiration from the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding natural beauty.

Catherine was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. She credits her parents for exposing her to a variety of art + culture and nurturing her creativity. She attended an Atlanta based college prep academy where her technical skill across multiple creative disciplines was pushed even further. Catherine then moved up to Greenville, South Carolina to attend Furman University where received her B.A. in painting and digital design. While at Furman, Catherine was accepted into the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd study abroad program in Cortona, Italy. It was during her semester in Cortona where she began developing her plein-air style and artistic voice. Upon graduating Furman, Catherine moved to Berlin, Germany to pursue an opportunity in freelance design and found herself surrounded by artists, photographers, musicians and the like. It was there where she saw the beauty and power of pursuing a career in the arts, and began to create again. Catherine launched her first collection in 2019 to a sell-out weekend. She received a third place ribbon for drawing in the Atlanta based annual juried exhibition “Café des Beaux Arts” for her charcoals works on paper.

Salmo Otto” was the beginning of my journey with oil landscape painting. During my time in Italy my professor, Jeremiah Patterson, allowed me to step outside of the traditional studio curriculum and take advantage of the natural Tuscan beauty that surrounds Cortona. "Salmo Otto” was one of the key inspirations behind the atmospheric perspective and textural foreground in my painting aesthetic.

Special Thanks

Fellow Artists: Laura Deems, Kate Waddell, Candler Reynolds, Haley Hughes, Brandon Brownlee, Willis Thompson and Madeline Barry for boldness in their creative pursuits and demystifying this process for me.

Family and Friends of the Collection: Margaret and Joe Hamilton, Betsy Verner, Leslie Hurst, Tillman and Aaron Fossas, Frances Hamilton, Mary Charles Hamilton, Stuart and Mary Stuart Hurst, Lizzy Hill, Anna Knight and Rex Humphries for supporting me in innumerable ways.

Finally, this creative practice would not have happened without the willingness in instruction and encouragement from my mentor Jeremiah Patterson. Words cannot express the ways his wisdom and technique have guided my hand and kept me at my easel, fighting for each piece.
